The monumental character of Begoña is based on the building in himself, of a magnitude that would not be understood easily based on the religious service to one anteigleisa, but like sanctuary of ample repercussion in its surroundings.
On a primitive hermitage it was constructed in the S. XVI the present temple, drawn up by
Sancho Martinez de Arego, who was also foreman responsible for the work of San Antón.
It is a basilical temple of three ships, without cruise, covers with vaults of crucería within the S. XVII, agreeing with the work of the choir that drew up Martín Ibáñez de Zalbidea in 1621. Therefore, the works lasted a century, since they had begun in 1511.
Throughout this century of construction the unitary course of the gothic style varied something, because in the middle of the S. From September of 1993 to June of 1994 works of stone cleaning are made and the clock reforms, carillon and bells. The clock carillon consists of 24 bells (the greater weight one ton) and were constructed in Sumiswald, Switzerland.
